Hussian College has closed abruptly.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education announced on its website last week that it had “received notice that Hussian College has determined it can no longer operate and is closing.”
The main page of the Hussian College website does not offer any details on its closure but does note that it is no longer enrolling new students. In addition to its Philadelphia location, Hussian maintained three campuses in Tennessee, two in California and one in Ohio. All campus locations maintained by Hussian appear to be closing, per various reports.
A Philadelphia Business Journal report cited “financial distress” as the cause of closure.
Plans to close had been in place since late May, becoming official as of this month. College officials had indicated that, after a brief summer break, classes would resume in June as the school sought to teach-out programs for current students. However, classes did not resume as planned at Hussian College, and employees were laid off.
The closure of Hussian College comes as higher education contends with declining enrollment, a shrinking pool of traditional-aged students and rising operational costs across the sector.
